Back by popular demand! Karin Kortje Presents: Night With The Stars returns to Cape Town’s Grand Arena next month, to once again honour and celebrate some of the best undiscovered musical talent within the Overberg region in the Western Cape.
The Overberg’s Got Talent competition, which runs till the end of August in schools from Grabouw, Villiersdorp, Caledon and Hawston, was conceptualized by Kortje in order to discover musical talent within the region, and to help them achieve their dreams of working in the entertainment industry.
Rooted in the history of this production is Karin Kortjes’ investment in young talent.
“I am fully aware of talent that exists in my hometown and because they do not have many singing opportunities, like the way I did when I won Idols, I feel it’s my responsibility to give back and nurture the future talent of the region, so that they too can realize their dreams,” says Kortje.
The music competition, which is running in its third year, will culminate in the winner being announced on 26 August. The 2017 winner of Overberg’s Got Talent will be given the opportunity to perform on the Grand Arena stage at GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World with amazingly talented artists in the industry as they share, captivate and mesmerize audiences with their voices on 15 September.
“My heart fills up with pride when I see all the talent that exists in South Africa. We have had so many children from the Overberg region enter this competition, with no formal musical training or vocal lessons, and when they audition, they exude so much talent – which reminds my as to why it’s necessary to give back to my community. My aim is to give them a platform to share their talent, with other top local stars and learn from these musicians to forge their own musical career,” says the mother of four children.
Kortje, who won Idols in 2005, says the idea of this competition started as a way to celebrate the 10th anniversary of her win on the reality TV show.
“I always knew I wanted to give back and working with my former band manager, Vernon Joorst, we’ve managed to recruit and audition children to participate in the competition. It’s been such a rewarding journey, with this years’ competition entrants really giving their all and I look forward to performing with the winner on stage next month.”
